Y: The Last Man Vol. 1: Unmanned

Y: The Last Man: Unmanned Vol.1 by Brian Vaughan, Pia Guerra and Jose Marazan, Jr is a rather interesting series. I picked up it on chance. The premise is thus: Yorick Brown is an amateur escape artist and son of a United States congresswoman. His girlfriend is currently traveling in Australia when the world is suddenly hit with a virulent plague that kills every man on the planet. Except Yorick Brown and his pet monkey. The genetic make-up of the only male alive on the planet earth becomes one of curiosity and amazement. What makes Yorick Brown so different from the other males on the planet?

The story is entertaining and flows smoothly. Yorick spends much of the story, running for his life from the Amazons who learn of his existence. The latter-day Amazons are a tribe of women who are a threat to any surviving males left on the planet. There is also some political humor as well. Since the government is now all female, the wives of the Republican husbands demand to have their husband’s seats and it’s all out gun fight for control. Those scenes were quite funny from a political point of view.

It’s an adventure story along with a mystery to find out why Yorick is immune to the plague and what he can do to re-populate the world. Talk about a huge responsibility! All Yorick wants to do is track down his girlfriend in Australia but that’s kinda hard to do with the roads blocked by the men who were driving when the plaque hit. There are currently 8 volumes in this series. I’ve read three thus far before moving on to something else. I plan to continue reading the rest. The stories move quickly and again, it’s entertaining stuff. This is a heads up to those who read graphic novels. The first three in the series were about B reads for me. Look forward to catching up with these characters later.
