Anticipated New Reads for 08

by Avid Reader on December 6, 2007

So, what books are you anticipating for the New Year? There really aren’t very many anticipated reads for me for the upcoming year. Maybe I can take a peek at someone else’s list. Anyway, I am excited about Shana Abe’s third book in her dra’kon trilogy coming Dec 07, Queen of Dragons. There’s also Patricia Brigg’s third Mercy Thompson book, Iron Kissed, due out Jan 2008. Wonder if the Mercy Thompson series will go hardcover? Last but not least, I have a long time to wait for Julia Spencer-Fleming’s I Shall Not Want (Jun 08). Anyway, here is my very brief list:

  1. I Shall Not Want by Julia Spencer-Fleming (08)
  2. The Serpent’s Tale by Ariana Franklin (08)
  3. Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs (08)
  4. Queen of Dragons by Shana Abe (Dec 07)
  5. The Ruby Dice (The Ruby Dynasty) by Catherine Asaro (08)

I’ll make sure my library has these titles in stock (no covers or descriptions available at this time):

  1. Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You by Judith McNaught (April 08)
  2. Guilty by Karen Robards (April 08)
  3.  Death Angel: A Novel by Linda Howard (Jun 08)

Hopefully, 2008 will surprise me with a treasure trove of good reads. I hope to discover a new romance author or two to enjoy (sans werewolf or vampire). Maybe add a couple of authors to my dwindling auto-buy list. I know many of you don’t read manga but I love it and will be reading more of it in the coming year. As you’ve noticed, I read almost anything and from any genre. I just wish I was a faster reader. Sigh.

As you can tell, I haven’t read anything this week but I’m working on that. I spent about $20 at eHarlequin yesterday since everything in their entire stock was half-price. I hope to find a couple of winners in there. On to some sad news, that shooting at the Mall yesterday makes online shopping for me a reality this year.  We had a similar incident at a mall a few days ago, too. I think it’s sad that an envelope of fear has developed during our Christmas season. As much as I enjoy the holidays, I can’t wait for them to be over.

Anyway, can’t wait to read everybody’s best books of the year lists! What new author’s you discovered this year? Best book read this year? Did you read any books outside of romance this year? And all the other stuff to go with that -worst reads of the year, polls, voting, etc and so forth. Stay well and be safe.

Ilona Andrews’ April release of Magic Burns and Joanna Bourne’s The Spymaster’s Lady in January.

Avid Reader 12.06.07 at 2:40 pm

Oh, yeah. I thought of Bourne title after I posted but I wasn’t aware of Andrews sequel. Thanks for that.

I just can’t think that far ahead…I know Kay Hooper has a new book coming out later this month adn I THINK the new Julie Garwood is coming in January? I’m hesitantly anxious to read it since i haven’t read a historical in ages…I think January is when SEP and/or Lisa Gardner have new releases too but I haven’t checked…*sigh*

Best book I read this year? Tough but I’d have to say KMM’s Darkfever (followed a close second by Vicki Pettersson’s The Scent of Shadows). Didn’t read a lot of “romance” but did read a lot of paranormal (i’m WAY behind everyone else in this regard) and a lot of YA — probably because of the lack of sex LOL

The new author I discovered this year was Megan Hart. I loved both Dirty and Broken, which were so much darker and more realistic than most contemporary romances I read. I think you would like them, Keishon. I hear that her earlier books are different from her recent stuff so I haven’t dug up her backlist, but I’m really looking forward to her laterst book that is coming out in January. Here’s the full list of my anticipated books in 2008:

  • Queen of Dragons by Shana Abe - December 26, 2007
  • Tempted by Megan Hart - January 1, 2008
  • The Spymaster’s Lady by Joanna Bourne - January 2, 2008
  • Like a Thief in the Night by Bettie Sharpe - January 15, 2008
  • The Perils of Pleasure by Julie Anne Long - February 1, 2008
  • Private Arrangements by Sherry Thomas - March 25, 2008
  • The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran - April 1, 2008
  • Fire and Ice (Reno’s book) by Anne Stuart – May 1, 2008
  • Love the One You’re With by Emily Giffin - May 13, 2008
  • Your Scandalous Ways by Loretta Chase - May 27, 2008
  • Token by Alisa Kwitney (graphic novel) - June 3, 2008
  • Reason Enough by Megan Hart (Spice Brief about characters from Dirty) - June 2008?
  • Delicious by Sherry Thomas - July 29, 2008
  • Fair Forune by Sharon Shinn - November 2008
  • Pam Rosenthal’s next book – Autumn 2008

I was not as excited by Emily Giffin and Anne Stuart’s most recent books as I was by the books they had written before that, but I’m still interested to read their next offerings. I am somewhat interested in the Patricia Briggs book as well, but I haven’t included it on my list because I still have Blood Bound in my TBR pile. I notice that no matter how well written they are, series that follow the same one or two main character or characters usually don’t excite me as much after the first book or two.

Sherry Thomas and Meredith Duran are both good friends of mine, but I also think they are very talented writers.

My middle paragraph was supposed to be a list, but it didn’t work out that way. Sorry about the formatting! I would have put in commas if I’d realized it wouldn’t work.

Li 12.07.07 at 3:11 pm

Oh, thanks for the heads up on the Catherine Asaro book - it’s on my must-get list now, though the cover’s errr… a typical Baen one?

Books I’m looking forward to - well, apart from “Iron Kissed”, Patricia Briggs is also releasing a full-length Anna & Charles book in 2008, can’t remember exact month now.

Also going up to about mid-2008 *deep breath*
Fantasy - urban or otherwise

  1. - Eileen Wilks’ “Night Season” (Jan)
  2. - Anne Bishop’s “Tangled Webs” (March)
  3. - Kelley Armstrong’s “Personal Demon” (March)
  4. - Elizabeth Vaughan’s “Dagger-Star” (April?)
  5. - Charlaine Harris’ “From Dead to Worse” (May)
  6. - Jacqueline Carey’s “Kushiel’s Mercy”

Romance

  1. - Nalini Singh’s “Mine to Possess” (Feb)
  2. - Eloisa James’ “Duchess by Night” (April)
  3. - Jo Beverley’s “A Lady’s Secret” (April)

Li 12.07.07 at 3:12 pm

Oh, damn - ditto what Janine said :-)

Avid Reader 12.07.07 at 6:38 pm

Sorry guys about the formating! I fixed it. Or did what I could to list them out because I’m curious to see what everbody else is looking forward to reading.

Li, great list. Yo, I finally saw the Asaro cover for The Ruby Dice - uh, cartoonish? It’s being released by Pocket and my library is getting a copy.

Hey Janinie, great list. I just bought Megan Hart’s Spice Brief, blanking on the title right now — -found it, it’s called, This is What I Want. I’m reading it tonight.

I still have to try Kelley Armstrong.

Hi Ms. Stuart, I saw the Kay Hooper book. Hooper is someone I’ve only read once and it was a category romance that was very, very good. Blanking on title.

Janine 12.07.07 at 6:42 pm

Hey Keishon. Thanks for fixing the formatting! :) It is much appreciated. I haven’t read Hart’s This is What I Want yet, or any of her other Spice Briefs, so you’ll have to let me know if you like it. I do know that she has said that her stuff from before Dirty is lighter in tone than Dirty, Broken, Tempted and the books that will follow.

Amie 12.07.07 at 6:47 pm

I TRIED to buy Megan’s Spice brief today but the website kept giving me fits.

And wasn’t that Kay Hooper book Finding Rachel?? I love her Bishop series!

Ya’ll are so organized you scare me. I can barely keep up with my grocery list hehe

Janine 12.07.07 at 6:57 pm

LOL Amie! I am more organized with my TBB lists than I am with my grocery lists!!! I’ve had an empty fridge but an emtpy bookshelf? It just doesn’t happen in my house.

I just noticed a typo in my list. Shinn’s book is Fair Fortune, not Fair Forune.

Avid Reader 12.07.07 at 10:42 pm

I upgraded my blog without destroying it. Phew. Now — Amie, hey, we love to keep TBB lists! Only problem is that mine has dwindled over the years. I even keep a database of all the books I own and it was somewhere in the 700’s when I decided to quit. I really don’t need a TBB list, but such is life.

Awesome that Shinn has another book coming out. Only problem is that I haven’t read anything by her in a few years so I’m collecting them and hoping I enjoy them. However, my mother reads her so it’s all’s good.

Trisha 12.17.07 at 6:33 pm

Late to the party, but here’s my list:

The Last Twilight and The Wild Road - Marjorie M. Liu
Demon Night - Meljean Brook
The Perils of Pleasure - Julie Anne Long
Bewitched - Sandra Schwab (mostly because after The Lily Brand and Castle of the Wolf, I’m curious to see where she goes next)

In YA:
The Time Paradox (Artemis Fowl) - Eoin Colfer
The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Betts - E. Lockhart
Sovay - Celia Rees
Janes in Love - Cecil Castellucci and Jim Rugg
Bloodhound - Tamora Pierce
the dead & the gone - Susan Beth Pfeffer
and even though I wasn’t so fond of The Luxe, I’m still dying to find out what happens next, so Rumorsby Anna Godbersen

I thought this was a very blah year for romance (yet again), but there were some awesome YA books…

Trisha 12.18.07 at 12:33 am

Oops, that should be The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart

Avid Reader 12.18.07 at 1:43 am

Hi Trisha! Great list and thanks for sharing. I’ll look up some of the titles and see if my library is getting any of them in. As for romances, I haven’t read very many this year and as for YA, I’ve hesitated on Artemis Fowl series but will see if it is available as a ebook or check the library since you enjoy it. I know it is wildly popular. I saw The Luxe but hesitated since the reviews are somewhat mixed and it is a tome, too.

Thanks for such an important blog about shopping. This is a very needed info about shopping sites. Thanks
