TV:The Wire Starts It’s Fifth and Final Season

Come January, The Wire will be airing it’s fifth and final season, Jan 6. Here is a brief snynop for the fans:

The fifth and final season of ‘The Wire’ centers on the media’s role in addressing — or failing to address — the fundamental political, economic and social realities depicted over the course of the series, while also resolving storylines of the numerous characters woven throughout the narrative arc of the show.

The Wire is one of the best series on TV that focuses on what’s broken in this country from the corner kids who sell drugs to the law whose job it is to put them behind bars. Life on the streets told from the law and the criminal point of view.  Last season (4th) focused on the broken school system and the season finale (5) will focus on the media with it’s fascination with violent crime while turning a blind eye to societal and economical problems that has continued to distance many from the American dream.  The show also will emphasize the marriage between the media and corporate America who control the news that we see and hear everyday. What I love about this show is it’s novelistic approach to the gritty and realistic portrayal of the urban community and it’s war on crime and drugs. The Wire was never a show that was a “huge hit” with the public, like say, The Sopranos. But that’s ok because as far as I am concerned, The Wire is a show that is ten times better than any show on TV today. You best believe. I saw the very brief preview for the new season and it states that “McNulty” is back to drinking again. All I can say to that is: welcome back McNulty. McNulty was domesticated last season and completely unrecognizable to me…but now he’s back.

The creator of this wonderful series, David Simon, who is married to novelist Laura Lippmann, has plans to create another series that is set in New Orleans with a story arc that focuses on the jazz musicians who were displaced by Katrina. All I have to say to that is: bring it on. Meanwhile, enjoy an “Invitation to the Set” of HBO’s The Wire. It’s also reported that episodes of season five can be viewed as early as December 31 on HBO On Demand.

I don’t know, there are so many possibilities… I’m thinking that Marlo won’t be touched but there are a lot of cards stacked against him with the bodies being found. All it would take was one “snitch” and Marlo would go down. I wonder if Avon will be coming back, that would be interesting.

I love Omar! It’s all in the game, yo. He is one of the best ambiguous characters on the show. I loved Stringer, too, just about had my heart stop when he was taken down in season three but what a way to go out! Then Bodie fell in season 4, that surprised me but not really, since Barksdale crew broke apart, his days was numbered anyway and Marlo — at the end of season four, they finally found the bodies so it will be interesting in how they take him down.

Hi Brie, I’m hoping this last season will be the best of them all. Who do you think is going to fall this last season? Marlo? Or will he get away?

It is so sad to see this show go. I’ve followed it since episode one and have loved every minute of it. I think that it was the gritty realism of their story’s that resulted in the lack of critical acclaim. Because while The Wire is a great show, it is almost too real for some people. Since most tv watchers use television, as many of us use books, for an escape, the idea of seeing Baltimore portrayed as it really is in a lot of respects is just too much for some to handle.

Non the less the series was excellent and I’m looking forward to seeing how everything gets wrapped up.

Yeah, the realism of the show is just too much for some people to handle. It used to bother me that this show didn’t receive any recognition like other HBO shows but that is OK. Anyway, I do think it is time for it to end. I trust David Simon to end this series with a bang — with everybody in position — the focus is back on the street again from a journalistic POV. Can’t wait!

Gawwwww I can’t believe it’s ending and I can’t even begin to tell you how much I LURVE this show!!! (More for it’s realism than anything else–which is probably why it was never a big hit)
