When I saw this story, it reminded me of a recent customer who admitted to me that he couldn’t read while I was helping him get an OTC product off the shelf. He was embarrassed and I immediately felt bad for him. He was an elderly gentleman, sweet and a regular customer. I can’t imagine would it be like to not read. Reading is my life. According to this article, illiteracy has far more devastating effects on everyday life that results in a shorter life expectancy according to the Archives of Internal Medicine. Illiteracy effects over 7 million people in this country with 27 million unable to decipher a job application and 30 million who are “unable to read a simple sentence.” You have to wonder about the future of this country when kids are dropping out of high school in record numbers.
