Here it is. What do you think? I think I like it even though it puzzles me a bit. Does this mean checkmate? Apologies, I do not play chess.

I got an erie feeling when I first saw the cover. I wondered if there was to be a war. I don’t play chess, I’m guessing the white color represents a vampire. The Volturi or possibly Edward and the red pawn is Bella.
Interesting thoughts Marye. Bella as a pawn between Jacob and Edward, maybe? Hmmm. I can’t wait to read it.
I think this cover is quite intriging. The Queen is the most important piece in chess, and the pawn is the weakest. The queen is not in a checkmate. Who is the queen? Bella? Possibly white meaning purity? Red is a rare color to use in chess. Is it just to stand out or does it have a meaning to do with bellas transformation from being a weak pawn, of flesh and blood, into a White powerful queen? Giving away that Bella finally becomes a vampire? So many questions. I can’t wait!
The covers for the twilight series always use red and white, (purity and innocence against the unpure and corrupted?) but i love the way its used here. Two sides of the chess board, the pawn and the queen, strongest and the weakest….Gagh! The excitment! Personaly i think its the transformation from human to vampire….but who knows!
If the cover did anything for me, it is to generate all kinds of possibilities about the upcoming story. I think Bella will be a vampire, no question. Are there not anymore enemies against the Cullens? and Bella?
Edited to add:
Checkmate. I’ll take that. I missed reading that, too. Sorry.
I didn’t really understand the New Moon and Eclipse covers, but in Twilight, Bella was represented by the pale white hands and Edward the red color of the forbidden fruit. Could this mean Edward is again the red (rook) and Bella the white (queen)? If so, because the queen is this most powerful I assume Bella would be changed into a vapire thus being stronger then Edward, or Bella change from weak, warm, blushing red rook to the cold, pale, powerful queen? I guess it comes down to the title too, what does Breaking Dawn mean?
I know there are prevailing themes with Ms. Meyer’s work. The title, Breaking Dawn, could mean anything and nothing really jumps out at me. I think we all agree that Bella will be a vampire. She’ll probably get turned earlier than had anticipated, probably?
i’m a huge fan of the twilight series and so far I’ve been able to figure out what the covers mean even before I read the books. but this one puzzles me dearly. And i feel as if my heart is breaking for I will not be able to get breaking dawn for we do not have enough money to do so. I can not even find a preview of the book, anywhere.
The brief excerpt is here Saruwatari:
i actually dont understand any of the covers except the on in twilight.
the cover in breaking dawn is really confusing.
you can see a lot of different ways actually depending on whether you like edward the best or jacob the best.
1) red pice (as in hot) = jacob.
and the white piece (edward’s pale skin) = edward.
so that mean that jacob can just be tossed out to save someone more valuable. and edward is stronger.
2)the red pawn can represent bella when she was a weak human.
and the white representing her being strong.
3)bella is the queen (white piece) meaning she has the “power” of i guess elimanating the red pawn.
4 )red=blood=edward. being the red pawn.
and that means bella chose jacob.
5)since chess is more of a thinking game it can just be about thinking ahead and having a “plan”
6)red piece represent blood. the the queen represents bella being able to resist blood.
7)or it can just mean that stephanie meyer really likes playing chess.
I think that the cover of Breaking Dawn means that ‘The queen is the most powerful’.
On a chess board, the queen is the most powerful peice. I guess that Bella is the queen. She is the most powerful, and she is practically playing a game of chess to keep herself alive. Every move she makes determines what happens next.
I think that some one will be sacraficed because in chess the pawn is most commonly sacraficed. The queen could mean a sign that the vultura are coming.
I think that the white queen represents Edward and Bella’s relationship. Even though it maybe the strongest element it can still be torn and destroyed by even the smallest and most insignificant player, the red pawn. I think of the red pawn as Jacob trying to ruin Edward and Bella’s relationship because he still loves Bella. He still couldn’t get over the fact even in the end of Eclipse in the Epilogue. I think thought Edward and Bella will fight to the end to make sure that they come out fine and eliminate the opponent.
I think that a lot of the commentors are very intelligent and you have me thinking people, thanks!!!! I strongly agree with some of them but strongly dissagree with some, too.
I think that the queen symbolizes the powerfull and pure love that Edward and Bella have and the ability for them to withstand all of the people and things that bring them apart , and that the red pawn symbolizes the volturi coming after Bella and wanting to transform her or kill her or an obstacle coming their way silently, since the pawn is barely able to be seen with the darkness of the backround of the book.
Just think about it…The chess piece is the “queen” and it’s white for ? innocence. The red pawn…red for blood..or love….or lust or all 3?? i think the queen definitly symbolizes Bella and her possible truimph over something…kinda like the “checkmate” comment
mm my belief is that the red pawn represents bella now, still “Human” and still selfconsious and then the white Queen represent her maybe when she gets CHANGED into a vampire!? possibly?
i hope so…
Okay, well, the white chess piece is a queen, thus meaning that it has to be a girl. Otherwise, if it was Jacob or Edward, Stephenie would have made it a king or some other piece. Also, just think about it, the only girl in just about the entire series that would make sense to have on the cover is Bella- so Bella is hence “the queen.” The red pawn can either symbolize Jacob or Edward, both pawns to Bella’s final decision. It could also symbolize Bella when she is a human, then the queen when she is a vampire. I personally think the title Breaking Dawn means a ‘new day, a new life’ for Bella when she enters the vampire world. Anyways, can’t wait!!! =)
I think each peice represents a side of bella. for example bella loves edward more than jacob so the white peice could be her love for edward and the red peice could be her love for jacob.
I believe that the red pawn represents new born Bella. All she will think about is blood. I think the white piece represents Bella as a more experienced beautiful vampire. I can’t wait to read Breaking Dawn. I really hope Jacob dies, I hate him. I know Bella will be changed into a vampire, but I wonder how the wedding will turn out…
ok this is going to sound stupid but here goes. I think its edwards mind which of course makes bella the white queen and then i think the red pawn stands for the Volturi. see the pawn is less inportant in the game so its less inportant to edward and hes not worried about the Volutri but he is constently worried about bella makeing her the most inportant. ok that sounds even more stupid then in my head but o well
i think the queen mean Bella as a vampire cold and beautiful, an the pawn mean Bella as a human warm and weak, but i donĀ“t think it means that she is becoming a vampire. i think it mean that her human life is being underestimated because the pawn is always seen as the weakest chess piece, but even a pawn can beat the queen if its well played so somebody is going to make bella see the real importance of her human life and the memories she is not willing to let go no matter how much she loves edward…jacob??
my friends and i have discussed the possible means of the cover but we still don’t rally no for sure.
1)Jacob is the Pawn [weakest piece] and Edward Is the white queen[strongest piece] meaning that the love Bella has for Edward is stronger than Jacobs?
2)Bella is the Queen and maybe Edward the pawn because the pawn is normally sacrificed in the game in order to win or help protect the king and queen and because Edward loves Bella so much he is wiling to sacrifice himself for her to keep her alive?
Well I think that this is her dream in ..chess form,,,
. The Queen is bella, white now because she was turned into a vampire. The red pawn however is lil Renesme. The game represents war possible agest the Volturi. Bella’s protecting “Nessie.”
Ta-Da my theory! :)
*WARNING* dont read this if you havent read the book yet. it will give away stuff.
ok what i think is that the white queen is bella, and the red pawn in renesmee. This i assume is to represent the part of the book when the volutri comes to the clearing and bella created her shield to protect resemee. bella is the strongest and renesmee is the weakest just as a queen is the strongest and a pawn is the weakest.
oh ha nvm. didnt see gabriellas theory there. but yeah i agree with you gabriella
Okay so maybe it’s me but it seems obvious what it means. Both pieces are Bella. The pawn is her when she was small and weak and not powerful. It’s red because red is warm and how she is as a human. And the queen is her after her transformation; a strong, pale, and beautiful vampire.
Maybe I missed it, but I’m eagerly awaiting your review of Breaking Dawn.
Hi Marye - I’m working on it. [g]
