Grading System
My grading system for books is pretty simple. I do tend to overlook flaws in a book I just couldn’t put down. Also, I read more for character and am drawn to novels that have diverse characters and deft characterizations. I like ambiguous characters; books that explore or have themes that are not always black or white. Here is my grading curve:
A reads: usually I lock my door and deprive myself of food and water until I finish reading (examples: Flowers From the Storm by Laura Kinsale, Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin)
B reads: usually these are quick reads but lack that “umph” to carry them over into the A range (The The Bone Garden by Tess Gerritsen or Exit Music by Ian Rankin)
C reads: average, unremarkable, forgettable (Hot by Julia Harper)
D reads: are D reads that are not worth remarking
Save the Trees: where my F reads reside; save a tree, kill the book is my motto
