Mys­tic River (2003) by Den­nis Lehane is set in the author’s home­town of Boston. It is a poignant and emo­tion­ally mov­ing story that clev­erly dis­guises itself as a police pro­ce­dural.
In fact, the story is told in third per­son and seems to be more of a char­ac­ter dri­ven crime novel. One of the best I’ve read.
